project-management · Freemium

What I Like

  • Industry standard for dev teams
  • Powerful agile features
  • Extensive customization
  • Strong marketplace

What Could Be Better

  • Complex and overwhelming
  • Expensive at scale
  • Slow performance
  • Steep learning curve

Why Jira Remains the Development Standard

Jira has been the development team’s tool of choice for two decades. Despite newer alternatives, it remains the standard for agile project management at scale.

My Experience

I work with Jira when integrating RevOps tools with development workflows. The Atlassian ecosystem is powerful, but I recommend Linear for modern teams who value speed and simplicity.

What Makes Jira Powerful

  1. Agile Depth - Scrum boards, kanban, sprints, burndown charts, velocity tracking—Jira has every agile feature you could want. It’s built by and for agile practitioners.

  2. Atlassian Ecosystem - Confluence for docs, Bitbucket for code, Trello for simple boards. The integration is seamless when you’re all-in on Atlassian.

  3. Marketplace - Thousands of apps extend functionality. Time tracking, test management, diagramming—there’s an add-on for everything.

  4. Enterprise Scale - Jira handles massive organizations with complex permissions, workflows, and reporting needs.

Where Jira Falls Short

It’s slow and often frustrating to use. Configuration is complex—you need a Jira admin. Modern alternatives like Linear offer better UX. Pricing escalates with apps and users.

Who Should Use Jira

  • Enterprise development teams with complex needs
  • Organizations standardized on Atlassian
  • Teams needing extensive customization
  • Agile purists wanting every methodology supported

The Bottom Line

Jira is still the right choice for enterprises with complex needs and Atlassian ecosystems. For everyone else, consider Linear or ClickUp for better developer experience.
